Zula started with a simple problem that anyone who's tried to get home from an event in the Winelands will recognise immediately.

THE PROBLEM

Uber wasn't built for this

Living in the Winelands, getting to and from events was always a mission. Uber in our area meant long waits — if you could even get one. Drivers would refuse the trip because the estate security gave them trouble at the gate. The cars were often terrible. And the way back from a big event? Hundreds of people competing for the same handful of cars, every single one surge pricing.

If you were with a few friends, you'd squeeze in and the driver would moan about the extra passenger. By the time you arrived anywhere, the mood was already gone.

So you'd try book a private driver. And that came with its own chaos — asking around in WhatsApp groups, feeling guilty for choosing one driver over another, not knowing if the price was fair, and then next time you needed them they were busy and you were back at square one.

The wine tour situation was its own kind of painful. You want to experience wine country — you live in it — but nobody wants to drive. Nobody wants to be the one who stays sober. So in the end you'd just not plan the tour. Too complicated. Not worth it.

THE MOMENT

The private driver experience changed everything

When you finally found a good private driver, everything was different.

They were there when they said they'd be there. No surge pricing — their price was their price, and it was fair. They were friendly, human, easy to talk to. They'd let you play your music. They knew the area — really knew it. "Have you tried that restaurant?" "Have you been to that farm?" The conversation made the journey part of the experience.

No five-minute pickup window. No complaining about an extra passenger. No anxiety about whether they'd still be there when you came out of the cricket match three hours later.

It was just better. In every possible way.

THE OPPORTUNITY

So I spoke to the drivers

I already had the idea for the platform by then, so I started asking questions. How do you find your customers? Where do you advertise? How do you decide on your rates?

The answers made the opportunity obvious. These were talented, professional drivers with no real platform to work from — relying on WhatsApp referrals, word of mouth, and gut feel on pricing. No way for guests to find them easily. No way for them to build a reputation that followed them. No tools to manage their schedule or protect their income.

Zula was built to give them what they deserved — a proper platform — and to solve a real problem for guests who just wanted a better way to get to (and from) the things they love. Even better, for guests who plan the journey as part of the experience.

Zula's mission is to make professional, human-led transport accessible for every experience — and to give the drivers who make those experiences possible a platform they deserve.

WHAT WE BUILT

A marketplace for engaged time

Zula connects guests with professional, vetted drivers for the full experience — not just the trip there and back.

Drivers set their own rates. Guests browse profiles, read reviews, and pick the driver that feels right. Deposits are collected upfront. The balance settles automatically after the trip. No cash, no awkward conversations, no chasing anyone.

Every driver on Zula is PRDP verified, licensed, and insured. Vehicles are admin-approved before they appear in search. Ratings are split — driver and vehicle separately — so the quality floor is real.
