Skip the Uber scramble: why groups are booking drivers for nights out

Zula Team · 26 Apr 2026 · 2 min read
Six friends, three Ubers, surge pricing, and the 1am pavement scramble. There is a better way.

The Saturday night problem

It's Saturday. Six of you are going to dinner on Bree Street. The plan is simple: dinner, maybe a bar or two, home by midnight-ish.

Here's what actually happens with Uber:

Getting there: Someone orders two Ubers. One arrives in 4 minutes, the other in 12. Half the group is at the restaurant already. You're 20 minutes late for your reservation.

Getting home: It's 1am. Surge is 2.5x. Everyone's on their phone trying to get a ride. Two people share one Uber, but the other four can't fit. Someone's standing on Long Street for 15 minutes waiting for a car that keeps cancelling.

Sound familiar?

The Uber scramble

We call it the Uber scramble — that moment at the end of a night out when your group fragments into individual ride-hailing attempts. It's stressful, expensive, and frankly unsafe.

And the cost adds up. Three Ubers at surge pricing for a round trip can easily hit R1,500–R2,000 for the group.

The alternative: one driver, one vehicle, booked in advance

Here's how it works on Zula:

1. Wednesday: You book a driver for Saturday night. Pick an SUV or MPV that fits your whole group. 2. Saturday 7pm: Your driver arrives. Everyone gets in one vehicle. You're at the restaurant on time, together. 3. Saturday midnight: Your driver is waiting. One message in the app. Everyone gets home. No surge, no scramble.

What does it cost?

  • Full night out: 6 friends, 2 legs, 3-hour minimum at R500/hr = R1,500 total = R250 per person
  • Late-night pickup only: 6 friends, 1-hour minimum at R600/hr = R600 total = R100 per person
  • Short pickup, low minimum: 30-minute minimum at R600/hr = R300 total = R50 per person

Compare that to three surge-priced Ubers at 1am.

But I can't book Zula last-minute

Correct — Zula is pre-planned. You book your driver hours or days in advance. But think about it: when has "we'll just Uber" ever worked smoothly for a group on a Saturday night?

The whole point is that your ride home is sorted before you leave the house.

It's not just about the ride

Every vehicle on Zula is a premium car — sedan, SUV, MPV, or minibus. No mystery cars. No broken aircon. You chose the vehicle when you booked, you saw the photos, and that's what shows up.

Perfect for

  • Dinner groups — 4–8 friends
  • Birthday nights out
  • Bachelor and bachelorette parties
  • Matric farewells
  • New Year's Eve
  • Music festivals and events
